It’s Back: The Charcoal Room Steak Dinner Giveaway

The Charcoal Room at Santa Fe Station has an extensive win list. The “classic” match for steak is Cabernet Sauvignon, says our Wine Geek.

IN DECEMBER WE GAVE away four delicious steak dinners to our followers on Twitter at the beautiful Charcoal Room at Santa Fe Station, and now we’re at it again! “Re-Tweet for Meat” is back with the same goal: reward our loyal Tweeps and showcase one of the best steakhouses in Las Vegas (view contest rules here).

In our blog post for the first contest, Station Casinos director of luxury culinary operations detailed the different cuts of meat (Filet Mignon, Porterhouse, Ribeye, etc.) expertly prepared at many of our Las Vegas steakhouses. This post, our in-house “Wine Geek” gives advice for picking the perfect wine to go with that juicy steak. Enjoy!

At Station Casinos we have a few Las Vegas steakhouses we’re pretty proud of. And let’s say you find yourself hankerin’ for your favorite cut (in my case it’s a bone-in New York). Maybe you head out to T-bones at Red Rock Resort, Hank’s at Green Valley Ranch, or The Charcoal Room at Santa Fe Station to satisfy your hunger. You order your favorite cut, grilled just the way you like it (for me, it’s the rare side of medium-rare). Then your server asks, “Would you like to see the Wine List?” If you’re a Wine Geek like me, you dive into that book like a kid opening a Christmas present. But if you’re not, a wine list can be confusing and even a bit intimidating. I mean, have you seen some of the prices? And what the heck do those names mean? Well, I’ve got some quick tips that’ll make it easy to pick a wine to go great with your thick, juicy steak.

First off, we’re talking red here. Skip the whole white half of the list. The “classic” match for steak is Cabernet Sauvignon. The best come from Bordeaux, France, or California’s Napa and Sonoma Valleys, and can cost a bundle. Some reasonably priced Cabernets you’ll find in our steakhouses include Franciscan Oakville Napa Valley, Louis Martini Napa Valley and Beaulieu Vineyards Tapestry Reserve Napa Valley. I know from personal experience Hank’s and T-bones offer B.V. Tapestry by the glass, so you don’t have to spring for a bottle. (Trust me, it’s good.) Not a fan of Cabernet? Try a Zinfandel (yes, real Zinfandel is red), like the Ridge Lytton Springs (T-bones has it by the glass). Or get adventurous, and try a spicy Petite Sirah, or a Chateauneuf du Pape, Malbec, or even a Brunello di Montalcino. Oops, I went all Wine Geek, didn’t I? Sorry. Also, don’t be afraid to ask the Sommelier for a suggestion in your price range. If you’re at T-bones, ask Melanie the Head Sommelier for help. She’s great, and really knows her stuff.

I hope that helps. And hey, if you have a favorite steak and wine pairing let me know. Or if you have a favorite steakhouse that has a good wine list, I’d love to hear about that, too.

Cheers,
Jeff Perry
