Stephan Bonnar is in for the fight of his life. At least the odds-makers see it that way. Bonnar is unanimously an 8-1 underdog (or worse) across the board 4 days out from his date with the Spider. Anderson Silva is largely recognized not only as the best in the sport, but the best of all time, with the only serious contender for that title being the still improving Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones. Due to the length of Silva’s current winning streak (currently undefeated in his last 15 bouts) the nod has to go to the veteran Silva.
So does that mean we’re in for a snoozer? By no means… It is after all Anderson Silva on the World’s biggest MMA stage (UFC), in the heart of the most fight crazy culture on Planet Earth: Brazil. We ended up with this main event (despite Silva’s title at Middleweight, this one is a non-championship 3- rounder) after another Champion set to defend his title (Jose Aldo) had his fight cancelled. In case you’ve been exploring the Amazon and haven’t tuned in to the MMA world for a while, there’s been quite a rash of such cases, where either the Champ or the top challenger is forced out due to injury. But don’t expect the crowd in Rio de Janeiro to be any less rambunctious with the replacement fight. Silva is just short of God-like status in his home country.
For his part Stephan Bonnar professes to enjoy the underdog status bestowed upon him by virtually every living breathing human than has ever heard of the sport of MMA, but stepping in as the 8-1 undie, and with Silva supporters unable to bet on him without risking $120 to win $10, Bonnar is more of an ‘under-mutt’ than dog. But some buzz is beginning to bubble for Bonnar, maybe not so much with believers coming to his side of the book, but at a number of veteran MMA watchers that can’t resist the opportunity to win big on a long shot. This is clearly the ‘longest shot’ for a UFC Main Event participant in ages.
Don’t count Bonnar out altogether. After all Dana White and Zuffa openly credit the success of The Ultimate Fighter Season 1, and particularly the finale between Bonnar and Forrest Griffin as having turbo-boosted the entire organization through it’s most difficult time. That boost was injected by a finale that stands to this day (7 years later) as very possibly the most exciting fight in UFC history. While Bonnar has not quite reached the heights that Forrest has post TUF (as an ex Light Heavyweight Champ), but Bonnar on his game, is still no slouch. He has some notable wins under his belt, a solid chin and a great ground game.
In other words, don’t count Stephan Bonnar out altogether. If there is a ‘Rocky’ figure fighting this Saturday, it’s Bonnar. And he’s got plenty of motivation. For his own safety UFC honcho Dana White has reportedly offered the use of his private jet for Bonnar to skedaddle out of Rio should the unthinkable happen…. a win by Bonnar would be nothing short of a seismic event in Brazil. This is more of a safety precaution from White’s perspective (Bonnar would not be treated to Roses like a Belmont Stakes winner were he to pull off a miracle). For Bonnar, the potential ‘Rock Star’ exit, leaving Brazil (on the company Jet!) after beating the man who has not lost in 15 fights and who is widely considered the best in the game …. to say the least, it’s a carrot for Bonnar’s horse.
Fan favorites like Antonio Nogueira and Dave Herman, some former and current contenders in Demian Maia and Jon Fitch, and some up and coming world beaters like Diego Brandao and Glover Teixeira, all make appearances on the undercard. This makes for a really solid night of fights overall. Where will you be watching UFC 153?

Enough has been said about the unfortunate drama leading up to UFC 152. If you’re a serious fan of MMA, it’s all old news to you. If you’re a casual fan you don’t really need all the details. If you’re not a fan of MMA at all, then you’ve stop reading by this point. Suffice it to say, the interim between the last UFC card and this Saturday’s salvaged event in Toronto has had its ups and downs (mostly downs). By the UFC’s own admission, the less than perfect circumstances (meaning injuries, scrambled replacements, and questionable decisions by some top stars) has been the most difficult period in memory for Dana White and Zuffa since their purchase of MMA’s premier promotion over a decade ago.
Saturday’s UFC 152 will go a long way toward determining how well the UFC has come through the rough patch, and how well the loyal fan base has stayed in tact. With two title fights on one fight card, Toronto should go a long way to repairing any lingering bad taste from recent difficulties.
World Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones will fight veteran Vitor Belfort, after speculation involving at least four other possible opponents for Jones over the past several weeks. Despite the long odds for Belfort, the UFC has managed to provide an intriguing match up none-the-less. While the aging Belfort is a huge underdog, he also possesses a unique style, significant power, and hand speed which Jones has yet to see in the cage. Vitor Belfort is also a long standing fan favorite which should be starkly evident during introductions where the ever more villainous ‘Bones’ Jones is likely to hear the fruits of recent career choices raining down from the mostly blue collar crowd in Canada.
Scheduled for the ‘Co-Main Event’ is the first ever UFC Flyweight Title Fight. This exciting match up virtually guarantees fireworks, as both 125 lbs. contenders Joseph Benevidez and Demetrious Johnson have made highlight reel inclusion a career specialty. Also making a return to the Octagon are Michael Bisping and Brian Stann, in a match up that easily could have been a solid co-main event on its own.
Add to the aforementioned bouts the returns from exile of Matt Hamill and Vinny Magalhaes (self-imposed and performance based respectively), and also the appearances by fan favorites Cub Swanson and Evan Dunham, and you have an event in 152 that stacks up as one of the better cards of 2012. It should certainly go a long way towards getting the UFC back to business as usual: combat sport at its finest.
WHEN: 5:30pm to 8:30pm on Tuesday, Sept. 25.
WHERE: Grand Events Ballroom at Green Valley Ranch
WHAT: Party to watch TV premiere of “Vegas” to benefit the Injured Police Officers Fund
HOW: RSVP required by Thursday, Sept. 20 at dchassereau@fertitta.com or 702.495.3298. Minimum donation of $50.

A big early August lineup is in store for UFC fight fans, with a potentially thrilling card lined up for the freebie on Fox this coming Saturday [UFConFox4]. That’s to be followed up a mere week later with the momentous UFC 150 featuring the championship rematch between current Lightweight title-holder Benson Henderson and the former Champ Frank Edgar.
The free card this weekend is sure to pack fireworks, as two former Light Heavyweight Champions go into battle as favorites over formidable opponents. Lyoto Machida and Mauricio Rua will not face each Saturday, but a future title shot rematch is at stake for each man. A ton of buzz surrounds the card for this reason, as Dana White just yesterday confirmed that UFC on Fox 4′s main event and co-main event will act as a 4 man challenger tournament for the next shot at Jon Jones 205 lbs. strap. Yes, we know what you’re thinking…. this absolutely does mean that the underdogs in both fights (Ryan Bader and Brandon Vera) have the rare opportunity to become a real-life Rocky story.
Local Fox 5 Las Vegas will be broadcasting live from the UFC Fight Party in Club Madrid at Sunset Station. Fox 5 anchors Olivia Fiero, Kevin Bolinger and Claudine Grant will be ON AIR hosts for the event. Doors open at 3:30 and the FOX team goes live with their Fight Night pre-show between 4-5pm. The beautiful Xyience Ring Girls and MMA Fight Corner host Joey Varner will be on hand, as will UFC Fighters Evan Dunham and Martin Kampmann. Other attending fighters to be announced later.
A number of other fan favorites and title contenders are on tap for UFC on Fox 4, and aside from Sunset Station you can catch the live action at any Station Casino Race and Sports book. Alternatively, you can catch it at home on your couch. It’s FREE on FOX people!

The following Saturday, August 11th marks a significant milestone with the roundly numbered UFC 150! The Lightweights always seem to bring it, and at the championship level it’s been years since a scrap for the belt wasn’t a barn burner. The rematch between Franky Edgar and Ben Henderson has ‘Fight of the Year’ potential, and a victory from either man solidifies a spot in the top 10 ‘P4P’ club [pound-for-pound best]. A win by Edgar would be particularly noteworthy and would go a long way towards cementing Edgar as legendary, not just a ‘former champ’.
UFC 150 also features 155 lbers Donald Cerrone and Melvin Guillard battling it out for top contender status among Lightweights. Based on past performance, you can’t discount the possibility of this fight outshining the main event for ‘Fight of the Night’ honors. Neither man is known for taking the safest route to home, and each are rewarded for their styles with fan favorite status. Should be a great co-main event.
UFC 150 also has Jake Shields going against Ed Herman, Yushin Okami battling Buddy Roberts, and a pile of promising up and comers will clash in the 185 lb. weight class and below. Stay tuned for an update and a full list of our fight parties in Las Vegas for UFC 150! And remember, you can catch UFC on Fox 4 at any Station Casinos Race & Sports Casino Bar. Enjoy all the mid-summer MMA action!
