Sin City Sinners Do Guns N’ Roses Right

My wife and I live and work near Red Rock Resort, so when we look for weekend fun, we catch concerts and parties at Cherry and at the pool during the summer, but it seems we don’t get to Green Valley Ranch very often. Last Saturday, we decided to make a night of it, and I’m glad we did. First, we split a delicious margherita pizza and calamari at Terra Verde. There was a bit of a wait, so when you go – call ahead and make a reservation. The lounge is perfectly fine for a quick bite, which is all we had time for before meeting our friends at Ovation to see Sin City Sinners.

Our friends affectionately refer to them as “The Sinners” and have seen them perform a handful of times. I always hear great things about the Stations bands, and these guys put on a fantastic show. The Sinners performed several originals and a handful of classic hard rock tunes before their second set – Guns N’ Roses epic album Appetite For Destruction – in its entirety.

The Sin City Sinners are known for their guest appearances, too. Dirrty, from The Spyderz, helped with a few tunes, including a great cover of the Rolling Stones’ Sympathy For The Devil, and during a break, legendary metal drummer Vinnie Paul took the stage to present the band with a gift guitar, then stayed to check out the show. Much to the delight of some of her fans, adult-film star and Penthouse Magazine Pet of the Year Sunny Leone gave away DVDs of her newest feature.

Sinners’ front man Todd Kerns nailed every lyric of every song, and the band was equally great. The show brought back some great memories of the GNR classics. Covering “Appetite” has got to be a tall order – everyone who knows the album, knows the songs and lyrics like the back of their hand. If they’re like me, they played the tape about a million times, then bought the CD, then somehow acquired the mp3s, too.  My friends and I all agreed that the show was great, but I was also impressed with Ovation. You never really know what type of show you’re going to see when a venue doesn’t charge a cover or sell tickets. I have been disappointed by this before at some Las Vegas concerts. The lights and sound were better than almost any in Vegas – and while they had a smoke machine running, it didn’t drive my wife crazy like it has at some venues. The crowd was pretty full, but there were still some very good seats available. Drink prices are very reasonable, and my friends and I decided that we’d be back for another show – sooner than later.

Catch the next Sin City Sinners show at Green Valley Ranch on Saturdays.

Grab Your Lederhosen! Jacktoberfest is back at Sunset Station

Jacktoberfest, poolside this Saturday at Sunset Station, is starting its own tradition of festive fun.

Jacktoberfest, poolside this Saturday at Sunset Station, is starting its own tradition of festive fun.

Jacktoberfest, to be held this Saturday (October 3) poolside at the beautiful Sunset Station Hotel & Casino in Henderson, Nev., has none of the history but all the festivity of the real Oktoberfest, which concludes Sunday in Germany. So while the two events may seem antithetical (that means opposites), here’s a quick light-hearted comparison that proves that ingenuity can, in some cases, makes up for a lack of tradition.

  • Oktoberfest – the original one in Munich – is in its 176th year, lasts 16 days and draws some six million visitors annually. Jacktoberfest is a little newer (in its second consecutive year), just the right length (one spectacular day), and last year was packed with a few thousand party people.
  • Oktoberfest has a bunch of beers you can’t pronounce, like Armbrustschützenzelt, served in big heavy steins. (Actually, that doesn’t sound too bad.) Jacktoberfest will have more than 30 types of beers, including a few you also can’t pronounce like Weihenstephaner Herfe Weissbeer to along with Budweiser, Pabst Blue Ribbon and more. One of the highlights of this year’s Jacktoberfest is sure to be the Hooters Bikini Girl Beer-Chugging Contest. Budweiser and Southern Wine & Spirits of Nevada are also two of the event’s sponsors.
  • Oktoberfest has tasty Würstel and those big pretzels. Jacktoberfest has Hooters!
  • Oktoberfest has charming traditional folk music, marches and polkas for that classic OOM-PAH sound. Jacktoberfest will have four kick-ass bands: The King Mixers, Hair Nation, Nawgahyde and Sin City Sinners. Jack FM 100.5 is also one of the sponsors (Jacktoberfest, get it?) and sure to keep the party upbeat.
  • Oktoberfest attendees don dirndls, lederhosen and those dashing alpine hats like in The Sound of Music. So do Jacktoberfest attendees. What’s more, the winner of Jacktoberfest’s sexiest costume contest will get $500.
  • According to the Munich Oktoberfest’s official website (www.oktoberfest.de), in the early years the festival ended with a dramatic horse race. Jacktoberfest will have wiener dog races (that’s right, those cute long dogs with short legs).

“Although it’s not quite as big as the original Oktoberfest and only one day, Jacktoberfest drew a crowd of nearly 2,000 out-of-towners and locals last year,” said Sunset Station Marketing Manager Nathan J. Sorenson, who will temporarily proclaim German heritage during the five hours, from 3pm – 8pm, of Jacktoberfest. “Being the ‘City of Entertainment,’ we felt it necessary to throw a party for what has been the largest fair in the world, Oktoberfest. We just put our spin on the festival with what we feel appeals to the people of Las Vegas.”

So, in conclusion, Oktoberfest and Jacktoberfest are both splendid events. It’s just that one is half way across the globe in some place called Bavaria while Jacktoberfest is right in your neighborhood.

Hope to see you at Jacktoberfest!
