A brew debut at five of our Las Vegas bars

Freshly brewed at Barley's in Henderson, Red Rock will be available at Wildfire Gaming locations. Join us for a free sample at one of our upcoming tapping parties. Cheers!

I’LL PERSONALLY BE attending the tapping parties at all the properties, and spreading the word about the new Red Rock beer. Well, it’s not really new, as Barley’s Casino & Brewing Company has been making it since 1996, but most of the valley hasn’t had a chance to try it yet! We’ll be serving free 12-ounce samples of Red Rock at five locations during the next week or so. Freshly brewed Red Rock will also be on tap for seconds, thirds, and so on at the bar.

In case you have never had the pleasure, Red Rock is a very classic German style of beer called “Märzen” (mair’ tzen), or roughly translated, March beer. In the 1500′s, refrigeration was non-existent, and you could only make beer when weather permitted. People found that after March, it was too warm to make beer, because it would go sour. So, the March beer would be made and stored in ice caves, awaiting the cooler fall season when it would be brought out and drunk heartily.

Tapping parties for the new Red Rock brew at the Wildfire Gaming Properties

Later, in the 1800′s, this was the basic beer for Oktoberfest in Munich. Ours is a classic Munich-style Märzen, rich red in color and fairly powerful at 6% ABV. The barley that is used to make this beer is actually called “Munich Malt,” as the color is specific to the Munich area. We use only the four traditional German ingredients of water, malt, hops, and yeast, foregoing cost-cutting ingredients like rice, corn and sugars that are found in most lighter American beers.

This is the beer you want to have with a bratwurst or knockwurst, or if you just feel like putting on your lederhosen!

It was mighty nice of them to name the casino after the beer, wasn’t it?

Cheers!

Props bets ready at our Las Vegas Sports Books

Nine pages and hundreds of props printed and ready in the Sports Books!

BITTERSWEET IN THE Sports Book. It’s the last weekend of football (boooo!). It’s the best weekend of football (yeah!).

Talking about betting on the Big Game, of course. The prop-bet sheets are printed and ready in all Station Casinos’ Las Vegas Sports Books. Nine pages and hundreds of props including some of my annual favorites such as:

  1. Jersey Number (odd or even) to Score First Touchdown
  2. Shortest Touchdown Scored by Either Team
  3. First Team to Challenge in Game

Here’s some quick advice from my years of betting props on the pro football championship game.

  • Don’t “over bet’ on the first score/touchdown of the game. There are many props on who will score first, but remember there’s four quarters (and maybe overtime?) so spread out your wagering fun.
  • Pick a scenario and go with it. If you think both quarterbacks are going to have big games, pick the props that support that thinking like Individual Passing and Receiving Yards and Overs on Longest Plays.
  • Take a few shots. It’s the last pro football game for awhile so have fun. Will there be a safety? Will there be overtime? Exact score by either team. All have big payoffs (and long odds).

Enjoy!

Las Vegas Nightlife: ‘Revolver’ loaded for Feb. 5 grand opening

Country cool, sexy and chic, Revolver's dance floor features Delilah, a 200-pound armadillo disco ball. The opening-night party on Feb. 5 at Santa Fe Station starts at 7pm.

While Revolver at Santa Fe Station is getting set to open, we say goodbye to Cherry at Red Rock Resort.

At risk of sounding unsentimental, this flip-flop of fates of two of our Las Vegas night clubs is often how things roll in the trendy, catch-lightning-in-a-bottle world of nightlife entertainment.

“The shelf life for clubs in Las Vegas is around two to three years. Cherry had a great four-year run but had run its course,” says Kyle ”Midnight” Markman of the Station Casinos Nightlife Group.

More Revolver pictures and info at the Station Casinos Nightlife website

For the record, Cherry Nightclub was part of the grand opening of the Red Rock Resort in April 2006. During its successful “run” it was the hot spot for nightlife in northwest Las Vegas and the Summerlin area. Plans for a new club at Red Rock are in the early planning stages. The next nightlife venue promises to be a “better fit for our current Summerlin clientele,” Markman said.

That leads us to Revolver, officially Revolver Dance Hall & Saloon, which is set for its big opening party on Friday, February 5 at Santa Fe Station. Tricia “Up All Night” Elder of the Nightlife Group paints Revolver as “Country with a twist, sexy and chic.” DJ music will be in the range of Carrie Underwood to The Black Eyed Peas. An amiable serving staff and well-priced drinks (Beergaritas!) to go with a giant armadillo (her name is Delilah) disco ball and mechanical bull set an unpretentious vibe.

Hours at Revolver are from 7pm to when the last man (woman) is still standing. (We’re thinking at least til 3am.) Covers on normal nights are $5 for women and $10 for men.

The weekly schedule at Revolver is running as follows:

  • Wednesdays: Wasted Wednesdays (ladies drink free until midnight)
  • Thursdays: Industry Night (bull-riding competitions)
  • Fridays: American BadAss Party ($1 shots of Jack, $1 Budweisers)
  • Saturdays: Dukes Night (ladies dressed Daisy-style drink free until midnight)

We know you miss Cherry. We know you’ll love Revolver!

What would you like to see in the next night club at Red Rock? Let us know below!

‘Red Rock Shootout’ to kick off 2010 NHC Tour

Red Rock Casino, Resort & Spa in Las Vegas — host of the $1 million Daily Racing Form/NTRA National Handicapping Championship (NHC) on January 29-30, 2010 — will host the second annual “Red Rock Shootout” on Sunday, January 31. The handicapping tournament again serves as the new year’s first NHC Tour event.

The Red Rock Shootout is a one-day tournament that will carry an entry fee of $100 and have a limit of one entry per person. All contest entry fees will be returned to participants in the form of prize payouts to the top five finishers on a 50%-20%-15%-10%-5% basis. The top two finishers will also receive qualifying spots to the 2011 NHC. Top finishers will also be awarded points as part of the 2010 NHC Tour.

All players must be at least 21 years of age to participate in the Red Rock Shootout. Contestants must make eight mythical $2 win and place wagers from available contest tracks. Four plays can be made at the player’s choosing from available tracks, and four will be made on designated mandatory races. For official rules or additional information, please contact Jason McCormick of Red Rock at 702-797-7798.

“The ‘Red Rock Shootout’ gets the NHC contest year off to a running start, coming right on the heels of the million-dollar NHC finals,” said Keith Chamblin, senior vice president of the NTRA. “The Red Rock Shootout affords NHC participants and spectators, alike, a fun and convenient opportunity to qualify for NHC XII in January 2011.”

The Daily Racing Form/NTRA National Handicapping Championship is the most important tournament of the year for horseplayers and is the culmination of a year-long series of NTRA-sanctioned local tournaments conducted by racetracks, casino racebooks, off-track betting facilities and horse racing and handicapping Web sites, each of which sends its top qualifiers to the national finals. This year, more than 100,000 people are expected to attempt to qualify for the 2010 NHC at Red Rock Casino, Resort & Spa in Las Vegas.

The NHC Tour is a yearlong bonus series offering additional prize money and qualifying berths to the DRF/NTRA National Handicapping Championship. Participants must pay an annual $125 registration fee. Tour members then receive NHC Tour points for top finishes in NHC qualifying events held during the year. Additional benefits for NHC Tour members include automatic enrollment in the Horseplayers’ Coalition. The Coalition seeks legislative and regulatory solutions to tax and business issues that impact pari-mutuel racetracks and their customers and provides grass roots support for the NTRA’s lobbying efforts on Capitol Hill. Tour members also are automatically eligible to participate in NTRA Advantage, offering preferred pricing on products and services from leading suppliers, including John Deere, Sherwin-Williams, OfficeDepot, UPS and Toshiba.

The AAA four-diamond rated Red Rock Casino, Resort and Spa is located 10 miles west of the Strip in Las Vegas and features more than 800 guest rooms, a spa, an array of gaming, 10 restaurants and entertainment offerings including Red Rock Lanes and a 16-screen movie theatre.  To learn more about Red Rock visit www.redrocklasvegas.com.

The NTRA is a broad-based coalition of horse racing interests consisting of leading thoroughbred racetracks, owners, breeders, trainers, horseplayers and affiliated horse racing associations, charged with increasing the popularity of horse racing and improving economic conditions for industry participants. The NTRA has offices in Lexington, Ky., and Rye Brook, N.Y. NTRA press releases appear on the NTRA web site, NTRA.com.

Las Vegas Concerts: Ted Nugent & Smokey Robinson at GVR

What are the odds? Two music legends. Both from Detroit. Both playing at the same arena within a few of weeks of one another.

That’s the deal when Rock n’ Roll idol Ted Nugent takes the stage at Green Valley Ranch’s Grand Events Center on Saturday, Jan. 23. Then, on Saturday, Feb. 13, R&B icon Smokey Robinson plays at GVR . The SC Blog also thinks this is awesome: although neither blogs, both are into Social Media. Cool, right? Even cooler, Green Valley Ranch, one of the coolest  hotel casinos in Las Vegas, is offering individual Las Vegas hotel packages for both shows (see links below).

PBA Tournament of Champions at Red Rock Lanes

Red Rock Lanes will host 63 of the world's best bowlers Jan. 19-24 in the 45th PBA Tournament of Champions.

SEATTLE – When the Professional Bowlers Association Tournament of Champions was introduced in 1962 by PBA founder Eddie Elias and the organization’s tournament committee, it provided the PBA Tour with an elite platform to showcase an exclusive field of champions.

The 45th PBA Tournament of Champions, to be conducted Jan. 19-24 at Red Rock Lanes at the Red Rock Casino Resort & Spa in Las Vegas, will feature 63 players who have earned their right to compete in the second major of the 2009-10 Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour season by virtue of winning a PBA title. The finals will be televised live on ESPN on Jan. 24 at 1 p.m. Eastern (10 a.m. Pacific).

With an event that has a rich tradition and a stellar field of players there are many storylines. Here are a few especially noteworthy stories:

  • Kelly Kulick of Union, N.J., will once again make PBA Tour history by becoming the first woman to compete in a Tournament of Champions. She earned her berth by winning the first PBA Women’s World Championship. Kulick originally made history by becoming the first woman to qualify for the PBA’s Exempt Tour in 2006.
  • Tom Smallwood, of Saginaw, Mich., who earned a Tour exemption after being laid off from his job at General Motors last spring, will try to win his second major after winning the PBA World Championship in December in storybook fashion against reigning Player of the Year Wes Malott.
  • At age 50, Hall of Famer and all-time PBA Tour titles leader Walter Ray Williams Jr. of Ocala, Fla., is still trying for his first Tournament of Champions win. As one of the few things the 46-time titlist has yet to accomplish in his career, a Tournament of Champions win would enable him to complete the Triple Crown (PBA World Championship, U.S. Open and Tournament of Champions) Grand Slam (Triple Crown plus the USBC Masters) and Super Slam (Grand Slam plus the Touring Players Championship).
  • Australian two-handed specialist Jason Belmonte will compete in his first Tournament of Champions after winning his first Tour title in 2008-09.
  • Thirteen-time PBA Tour Champion Patrick Allen of Wesley Chapel, Fla., will be looking to defend his 2009 Tournament of Champions title.
  • Jason Couch of Clermont, Fla., is the only player to have won three consecutive Tournament of Champions titles and will be looking to become the first bowler to win it four times.

Check out Red Rock Resort’s “Tournament of Champions” Hotel Package special for the big tourney!

The Tournament of Champions is open exclusively to Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour exempt-player champions; the winners of the most recent PBA Regional Players Championship and Regional Players Invitational; the United States Bowling Congress Masters winner; the USBC Senior Masters, PBA Senior U.S. Open and PBA World Championship winners; all Tournament of Champions past winners, PBA Hall of Famers, and for the first time, the PBA Women’s World Championship titlist.

The first Tournament of Champions was conducted in 1962 in Indianapolis. The event was not conducted in 1963 and ’64 but moved to Akron, Ohio, in 1965 where it was conducted until 1994. Since then, it has been conducted in various locations.

Win a Dinner for Two at a Great Las Vegas Steakhouse

The Charcoal Room at Santa Fe Station.

The Charcoal Room at Santa Fe Station. (Not pictured: You eating a free steak.)

We got the steak and the sizzle.

Starting the week of December 14 with the amazing Charcoal Room at Santa Fe Station, we’re giving away four steak dinners for two. The Charcoal Room is one of nine first-class Las Vegas steakhouses at Station Casinos locations.

Click to get the juicy contest details

The steak dinner giveaway is part of a meatier message from Station Casinos: A Great Steak is Just Around the Corner! In other words, you don’t have travel too far or pay too much to get the best cut of beef in Las Vegas. For instance, the four winners of this month’s steak dinners at The Charcoal Room will be able to select from Filet Mignon, New York, T-Bone or Ribeye. If you’re like me, you know you love steak but don’t know all that much about the actual cuts. Here’s a breakdown courtesy of Bryan “T-Bone” Dillon, director of luxury culinary operations at Station Casinos.

Tenderloin (Filet Mignon)
Known as the most-tender cut of beef as well as the “Cadillac of Steaks.” Extremely juicy and when cooked over high temperatures on a seasoned wood grill it produces a flavor profile that is buttery and mild with a succulent flavor and consistently great eating. This is cut from the least-used muscle on the animal and therefore doesn’t get overworked and tough.

New York Sirloin (aka New York Strip)
Bone-in or boneless, this is a lean and tender eating steak with a robust classic beef flavor absolutely perfect for people looking for a great beef experience.

Porterhouse or T-Bone
Truly the best of both worlds as it is comprised of both the tenderloin and the New York sirloin. It boasts extremely tender cuts and has exceptional beefy flavor because of the bone that runs through the center. Known as the “King of Steaks.”

Ribeye
A true steak-lovers steak: rich flavor, juiciness and tenderness with rich marbling throughout. Pan-seared or grilling produces outstanding results. One of our guests’ favorites, hands-down.

“Our steaks are certified Angus Beef, which boasts superior marbling for flavor and juiciness and is consistent in coloration and texture,” Dillon said. “Our product is graded to meet Station Casinos’ demanding specifications and is chosen only from animals that meet our standards for age, breed and finish (i.e., corn-fed an all vegetarian diet to produce consistent marbling throughout).”

Win a steak dinner for two at Santa Fe Station’s Charcoal Room. Here’s how:
