Sunset Station to Host Rockin’ Fundraiser for St. Baldrick’s

LAS VEGAS – Club Madrid at Sunset Station will host a signature St. Baldrick’s head-shaving event, which benefits pediatric cancer research, on Friday, March 16 at 9 p.m., and the public is invited. Among the volunteers for head shaving: Sin City Sinners, who perform at Sunset Station’s Club Madrid every Friday night at 10 p.m. and “Big Mex” from KOMP 92.3. The event holds personal significance to “Big Mex,” who is a father of three, and Brent Muscat from Sin City Sinners who is both a parent and cancer survivor.

Before the concert, featuring self-penned originals and rock and roll covers from Sin City Sinners, the clippers will come out! Brent Muscat from the group, who is known for his many years on the music scene as founding guitarist for Hollywood legends Faster Pussycat in addition to his time with Sin City Sinners, will have his iconic long hair shaved. Team members of Sunset Station also losing their locks include Slot Manager Will Provance and Casino Host Mervin Siquia, a parent expecting his second child whose cousin lost a son to Leukemia. This is in addition to members from the KOMP 92.3 “Big Mex” team. Celebrities who will be on hand for the event include Carlos Cavazo of Quiet Riot and Eric Dover  of Slash’s Snakepit and Alice Cooper.

As of the release date, more than $6,100 has been raised for the event. More donations are expected to come from both the community and a fundraising auction at Club Madrid, held by “Big Mex,” on  March 9 at 10 p.m.

Worldwide, more than 160,000 children are diagnosed with cancer each year, and it remains the leading cause of death by disease among children in the United States. With only 4 percent of all federal cancer research funding dedicated to pediatric cancer research, St. Baldrick’s Foundation grant funds are critical to continue the battle against this devastating disease.

All ages are welcome at the event and show, tickets are not needed and admission is free. However, space is limited, so an early arrival is suggested. More details about the event are available at http://www.stbaldricks.org/events/mypage/8231/2012, about Sunset Station: http://www.sunsetstation.com/entertainment/club-madrid/weekly/ and Sin City Sinners: http://thesincitysinners.com/.

Nice Flair …

Say “Hi” to Oscar and Carolina tonight when they’ll be behind the Lucky Bar at Red Rock Resort for “Luck Be A Lady” Thursday Nights where there’s free drinks for ladies from 7-11pm.

Impress Your Friends With Seasonal Items

SPRING IS APPROACHING and it’s time to go after the seasonal items that have been missing for a while. Go to local farmers markets and get the inside scoop. Take advantage of crops that aren’t readily available to the masses.

Have your neighbors over and make them jealous that you scooped them on the good stuff. It’s guaranteed to impress them. It’s a great time for vegetables and fruits like asparagus, artichoke and strawberries, and let’s not forget about the refreshments.

It’s time to break out the bartenders books and remember how to make a Margarita, a Hurricane, or just enjoy your favorite gin with a boutique tonic water. Blood oranges and berries are good bet for Spring, especially if you want to try your own hand at cocktail invention.

You can’t go wrong adding Rum or Vodka which are perpetually in season. Rye Whiskey and all manner of fruits and nectars work nicely together this time of year. Don’t forget about grapefruit, which goes nicely with Tequila! The key to this season is color. Make sure its plentiful both on your plates and in your glasses (and those of your guests).

Whatever your plans, change things up a little. With a nod to the changing of the seasons, life deserves a good kick start to follow mother earth as she defrosts and the sun makes its annual pit stop between the ski slope and the pools and beaches of summer.

Seven UFC 144 Viewing Parties In Las Vegas

THE MAIN EVENTS for UFC 144 will get their share of the headlines, including a highly anticipated lightweight title fight and the return of the all-time Japanese crowd pleaser Quinton Rampage Jackson. You’re in for a great fight card top to bottom this weekend at our UFC 144 Viewing Parties in Las Vegas. The UFC has pulled out all the stops for this highly significant return to martial arts sacred ground. Several of Japan’s best fighters are showcased on this card, plus two fighters will return from the losing end of recent title fights. Jake Sheilds and Yushin Okami both have their backs to the wall and need impressive performances.

The main event between reigning lightweight champ Frankie Edgar and #1 contender Benson Henderson could turn into a marathon. Each fighter possess a huge gas tank and a solid chin. The co-main event could be the mirror image, however. With light heavyweights Rampage Jackson and Ryan Bader clashing, this fight is likely to be significantly shorter in duration. Have your beers in hand for this one before round one is officially “dinged”.

Edgar and Henderson are both extremely fast and tough cardio warriors who like to take their opponent’s game apart methodically while keeping them guessing over the course of many action packed rounds.  Rampage and Bader likely just want to bang it out. Rampage is royalty in Japan, a major star who wants an exciting fight even more than he wants the win. Stemming back from his prime in the formerly prominent PRIDE organization, there is an entire nation of MMA fans waiting to welcome him “home”.  Both Jackson and Bader bring a monster right hand shot, and with that a potential one punch finish to their rival’s evening.

My pick for the DON’T BLINK fight of the night is Anthony Pettis vs. Joe Lauzon. Pettis is famous for flying off the cage and landing a head kick to main event participant Benson Henderson in their earlier bout for the WEC title (see it at the end of this post). Meanwhile, his opponent Joe Lauzon just collects “fight of the night” bonuses for a living. Seriously, blink and you might miss this one!

In The Spirit of Valentine’s Day we’re happy to spotlight some upcoming live entertainment events scheduled at Station Casinos venues featuring artists that are noted for a romantic side:

Melissa Manchester – The singer noted for “Don’t Cry Out Loud” and her Grammy winner “You Should Hear How She Talks About You” has sung her heart out on her fair share of ballads. She plays the best kept secret in the Vegas Valley, The Railhead at Boulder Station, on 2.24.12.   Get Tickets For Melissa Manchester

David Nail – Anyone that’s favorably compared to Frank Sinatra knows a thing or two about a ballad, and modern Country artist David Nail certainly knows his way around a love song, with smash hits like “Let It Rain” and “Red Light”.  David plays Chrome Showroom in Santa Fe Station this Saturday night, 2.18.12.    Get Tickets For David Nail

Mat Kearney – With an album titled “Young Love”, Mat Kearney is an easy choice for this list. Mat brings his adult contemporary up from Nashville all the way to Aliante Station’s Access Showroom on 2.28.12. This one is a few weeks away but worth the wait. With a song that was heavily featured on Grey’s Anatomy, you know Mat has broken a few hearts in his day.   Get Tickets for Mat Kearney

Jon Anderson – The legendary front-man for the iconic progressive band YES knows a thing or 2 about love. Let alone his penchant for bursting into the Beatle’s classic “All You Need Is Love”, Jon has spent his entire career writing and singing on the topic. He plays Ovation at GVR on 2.24.12   Get Tickets For Jon Anderson

Little River Band – With Top 10 hit singles like “Lady” and “Lonesome Loser”, not to mention 25 million in record sales to their credit, it’s safe to say this Australian born act has had a 30 plus year love affair with American audiences. The Little River Band plays Ovation at Green Valley Ranch on 2.25.12   Get Tickets For Little River Band

Poco – These California Country Rockers sprang out of the 60’s icon Buffalo Springfield. With notable hit songs like “Crazy Love” and “Pickin’ Up The Pieces”, you better believe they can croon with the best of them. Poco performs live on 2.18.12 at Sunset Station’s Club Madrid.   Get Tickets For Poco

Adal Ramones – Not getting the connection? Comedian Adal Ramones Mexican Television hit “La Pesera Del Amor” was a forerunner of the current “Bachelor” craze on American Television. Adal’s version dates back to 2003! When it comes to love, Adal was ahead of his time, paying for the wedding and broadcasting it live. Adal Plays the Dallas Events Center at Texas Station on 2.25.12.    Get Tickets For Adal Ramones

A Commitment To Earn Loyalty Through Excellence

SEVERAL WEEKS ARE in the history books in this still faintly brand new year.  As we had hoped and expected, our properties have started the year very strong. It seems an appropriate time for some thoughts on what lies ahead in 2012.

This January marks for us another colorful page in a remarkable comeback story. Station Casinos has looked to improve each and every year since some well publicized rough seas not so long ago. Our most recent chapter is a point of pride for me personally, and for Station Casinos as a whole.

Since emerging from bankruptcy our Team Members have shown a renewed commitment towards service excellence.

Our guests, (both local and non-local), have picked up on this renewed focus on service and we are deeply committed to continuing on this course.

Our aim is to climb this mountain all the way to the top and plant a flag that lets our competitors know that we are not just here to compete. We are committed to winning!

It is our goal to win guests’ continued patronage for years to come, and we make a promise to live up to our guests’ expectations. Our stated goal is not to sit back and admire what we’ve done in the past, but rather to keep stoking the flame that symbolizes our return to prominence.

Observers will notice a rather aggressive attitude toward winning guest loyalty from the top down. Our aim is not toward maintaining the new and improved status quo, but in maintaining the trajectory of our improvements.

The quality found in our hotels, casinos and resorts will be such that a first time visitor will become a long time friend. Our goal is for the next (or first) experience of each and every guest of our properties to be a memorable one.

To simplify my vision, if we have the opportunity to host a guest once, the guest will count the days until their next visit. 2012 provides us a great opportunity to raise our own expectations and to impress our guests like never before. We are committed to excellence and we are committed to consistently earn guest loyalty.

In Search Of The Deal

IF YOU’RE LIKE me, when it comes to dining, you’re perpetually in search of a deal. It’s not so much to do with financial concerns, although you can’t be too frugal these days.  For many like me, it’s more about the challenge. It’s just fun to find a great value after putting some small bit of effort into the search.

Wine is a good place to start. When ordering an expensive wine on occasion I expect big things and can only be satisfied or disappointed (although I expect the former). But if I take a chance on a $35 bottle that I don’t know anything about, there’s an “excitement of the chase” that’s also brought “to the table”.

I can’t help but get excited, that this may be my next great find, my new favorite that won’t break the bank. In this spirit, and that of the New Year, I plan to try new things. It may be a wine from a new region, a new style, a new varietal.

This determination applies to other aspects of the dining experience.  It may be a new exotic beer or a freshly invented cocktail. My adventure may well go beyond beverage and into the realms of the kitchen. I look forward to trying a new fish I’ve never heard of or pasta that I’ve previously ignored.

One thing I am certain to find on such a quest with this type of mandate is new territory. That’s what it’s all about. That’s the tastiest morsel, the part that is most memorable. I can’t think of any better approach, to dining or to life in 2012.

Where to Watch UFC 143 in Las Vegas

WE KNOW THERE’S a little something going on this Sunday night in the sports world – but that doesn’t discount another super event here in Las Vegas this Saturday night. Not long ago, the UFC 143 main event could have been considered a welterweight title unification bout.  Ex-Strikeforce champ Nick Diaz will be in a brawl vs. Ex-WEC champ Carlos Condit for the interim welterweight belt. The winner goes up against UFC 170-lb. champ, Georges St. Pierre to unify the belt – presumably later this year after GSP recovers from an injury.

Several great fights are lined up on the fight card for UFC 143. My picks for DON’T BLINK fights are Josh Koscheck vs. Mike Pierce and local fighter Roy “Big Country” Nelson vs. Fabricio Verdum in what’s sure to be a heavyweight slugfest. Koscheck gets a lot of boos, but the fact is, he’s a well-rounded vet wrestler who’s not afraid to bang, and Mike Pierce is an up and coming guy who just beat up a very tough Jon Fitch. Roy Nelson is a lean machine now, and he’s hungry for a title shot. Verdum has fought the top heavyweights in several organizations, so… you know, don’t blink.

We will be watching at one of the UFC 143 Fight Parties in Las Vegas at Station Casinos listed below.

*PLEASE NOTE: Sunset Station had a scheduling conflict, so those who are used to watching with us at Club Madrid will want to cruise over to Fiesta Henderson, GVR or Boulder Station if you’re looking for a fun place to watch UFC 143 in Henderson.
