A Guest Blogger’s Perfect Night Out Under the Stars

SO AS A Vegas local its not often that we get to enjoy quality concerts outdoors at night. Up until this point we have only had one on-Strip option for this and it has its drawbacks. So much to my surprise Red Rock Casino invested a lot of resources into building an outdoor concert stage and a really dynamic lineup. It’s still a surprise to me that this entire experience isn’t on the strip.

So depending on the size of the audience for their summer concert series the show is either out by the pool or in the newly built outdoor arena. The night I ventured out featured The Gypsy Kings and was out by the pool. Walking out to the pool area I suddenly realized that there probably wasn’t a more perfect venue for this show. A concert under the stars is a fun and unique experience which if you haven’t done yet you simply aren’t living. There was ample space and the sound was great. It seemed natural that this should be the place for shows like this.

The other big perk was the seating options! You can take a seat and lounge by the pool, you can sit on a raised area overlooking the entire event, or sit in a tiered seating area in front of the stage. Quite honestly there seemed to be only one drawback and that would be all the bars are cash only. So if you venture out, and lets be honest you should, make sure you hit the ATM before going in.

Now I have spent this entire time gushing on the venue but, I should say something about The Gypsy Kings. Never can I recall seeing such a diverse crowd in one place. Their music was great and everyone was having a blast. Personally my only let down is they didn’t play their version of “You got a friend in me” from Toy Story 3 but, lets be honest I doubt that was going to happen. It was really a great night with a perfect combination of place, people, and music.

Toby, Vegas & Stations … Now And Then

BY NOW YOU have heard that Toby Keith is returning to Red Rock on August 6 with Eric Church and JT Hodges. We go way back with Toby Keith. In fact, he has performed more concerts at Station Casinos than any other headlining artist. Since the mid-1990s, Toby has rocked Las Vegas Country fans at six Station Casinos:  Boulder Station, Texas Station, Palace Station, Sunset Station, Red Rock and Green Valley Ranch!

Have you read my Monthly Entertainment Blog Post?

When we announced the show back in April, some of our facebook friends asked questions referring to our most recent Toby Keith concert in Las Vegas, back in 2009 at Red Rock. This one’s much different:

  • Brand new venue – the Red Rock Casino Amphitheatre (with newly painted seat lettering).
  • Toby Keith Concert Seating Map

    Toby Keith Concert Seating Map

  • Bigger show – It has 8,800 seats – ALL reserved. Click on seating chart to the right here.
  • Can I get a drink? You bet. At any of 40 bars – minimizes your wait time so you can get back to your seat quickly.
  • Can I get a good seat and see the show better? Yes! The farthest seat is 220 ft from the stage. There are no bad seats.
  • How is the parking? Improved. You can park at either parking garage, but we recommend the overflow lot on the corner of Park Center and Pavilion Center Drive. Enter from Charleston Blvd.
  • How much are tickets? Tickets start at just $43! Big fan? Upgrade to $69, $89, or $125 tickets. (Plus taxes and fees).

Here’s where to purchase Toby Keith Concert Tickets – before they’re gone!

We’ll end with this classic Toby Keith video, one of my faves, Should’ve Been A Cowboy!

Interview with Las Vegas Band: Otherwise

EVEN WHEN, ESPECIALLY when, it comes to music, Station Casinos loves locals. Our entertainment managers build strong ties with many local bands, often booking them at our various casino lounges, showrooms, clubs and pools. We help local bands connect with new and old fans through our facebook pages and we talk them up on twitter, and share blog space with them just like this. GVR recently announced an upcoming show with Las Vegas’ favorite hard rockers, Otherwise. The Otherwise show at Green Valley Ranch is April 2, there’s no cover and we welcome those 21+. (Come early if you want a seat!)  We recently caught up with Otherwise front man, Las Vegas native, Adrian Patrick:

Adrian, you and your band mates in Otherwise have been busy! Congratulations on an exciting year. Where have you been recently?

2010 was a break-out year for us Wise-Ones; we had the opportunity to tour twice last year: during the summer on the Rockstar Mayhem Festival with Korn, Rob Zombie, Five Finger Death Punch, Atreyu & In This Moment, and then again on a winter tour with In This Moment, Non-Point & Taking Dawn. So we were able to gain a lot of exposure across the entire nation & up into Canada, as well.

What’s the history of Otherwise, in a nutshell? Are you all from Las Vegas?

Yes, 3 out of 4 of us are born & bred here in Vegas. My brother & I started the band back in 2004 when we realized neither of us were going to play pro football! We needed to find a way to give our parents the life they deserve, while still feeding the fire within ourselves.

How did you connect with In This Moment, and what can you share with our readers about that experience?

We linked up with In This Moment through Grammy-nominated producer Kevin Churko. They needed a male-vocalist for their rock-metal duet “The Promise” so Kevin recommended yours truly, after we recorded our single “Lighthouse” with him. “The Promise” is currently in the Top 30 on the Billboard Active Rock chart & the rest, as they say, is musical history. In This Moment was one of our favorite bands before getting the opportunity to work with them, so it was the experience of a lifetime to get a chance to become friends with them; we’re blessed to know that band.

The rock scene is pretty tight here, isn’t it? Any area bands that Otherwise wants to give a shout-out?

The Vegas scene is pretty cool, TAKING DAWN & ADELITA’S WAY are two bands that have done well for all us Sin City rocker-boys by signing major-label deals & touring the world. Mike Stanley from CONFLICT OF INTEREST, Chase Grijalva from FALL IN VAIN & myself have been through a lot of the same struggles together. Plus, we have the support of some of the best venues in the nation thanks to remarkable people like Monica Reeves at Station Casinos, Holmie Pooser at the House of Blues & Mark Hornsby at the Black Door.

Are you a Mac or a PC? iPhone, or Droid?

None of the above, I use my cell phone strictly for texting purposes only… that’s all I need!

You’re playing in the same room Steel Panther packs on a weekly basis, so I’ll ask you some of the same questions I asked them:

Van Halen or Van Hagar? Definitely a Diamond Dave fan! (Note: a.k.a. Van Halen)

Ozzy or Lemmy? Since Kevin Churko did his last two albums, I have to go with Ozzy!

April 2nd at Ovation inside Green Valley Ranch is going to be a special night. Anything special we can say to the local Otherwise fans?

We are very lucky & grateful to have the kind of support that we do, here in our beloved Las Vegas. Yes, we’ve endured some very dark times as a band, but we’ve also seen the brightest Light together, & that’s largely thanks to the people here in this city who constantly motivate & inspire us to continue doing what we love. We’re always striving to make our supporters proud to call themselves Wise-Ones.

The Return of Steel Panther: Michael Starr Interview Part 2

AFTER TWO LONG months of good behavior, Steel Panther is welcomed back with open arms to Green Valley Ranch’s Ovation beginning Saturday, June 19. Best known for its embodiment of all that is rock ‘n’ roll, the ’80s glam metal parody band rocks the stage with its colorful repartee, loud costumes and graphic body language, in addition to paying homage to great bands like Bon Jovi, Motley Crue and Poison.

Steel Panther Live in Las Vegas at Green Valley Ranch

Fans fill Ovation to see Steel Panther shows, so show up early this Saturday night!

We caught up with lead singer, Michael Starr, to talk about what’s new with Steel Panther in this, the second of two interview blog entries. (Interview Part One)

*Consider yourself warned, some of the language in this interview is as colorful as an 80’s spandex jump suit. The opinions expressed in this interview are not necessarily those of Station Casinos, Green Valley Ranch Resort, the management, the web team, our internet host, any of the casino hosts, the door guys at Ovation, or anyone else we may have forgotten. If you’re easily offended, jump over to one of our wonderful recipe blog entries instead. They’re delicious!

Continued from Part 1…

Station Casinos Blog (SCB): What’s this we hear about a Steel Panther television show and  – didn’t we see you guys in a beer commercial recently?

Michael Starr (MS): Yeah, that’s cool you mention that. We shot a Bud Light ad in December, and it was supposed to come out for the Super Bowl, so we had this big party and we got a bunch of strippers and had them come over and watch with us, but then it didn’t air! So we’re all, like, bummer, dude. But then I was at a bar in Henderson last week, and a friend of mine said he saw it during the Stanley Cup Playoffs, so I guess they decided to start playing it. It’s about a guy who gets a haircut and they turn it into a huge party… hell, I don’t know. I haven’t even seen the finished ad yet…

The Comedy Central thing: really important. We’ve been trying really hard to bring Heavy Metal back. Everybody in this band LOVES Heavy Metal.  That’s one of the things people absorb when they see us – we really, really love what we’re doing. I think this show is our way for us to get into every household. Because, with the record, we sing about whatever we want, and it’s tough to get it all on the radio, if you know what I mean. (Laughs, referencing some song titles we can’t mention here. Hey, our mothers read this blog! ) So we went in and re-recorded some of the songs and changed out some of the dirty words for TV. Comedy Central contracted us to do a pilot to show how our Mission (to bring Heavy Metal back) is going.  It shows the struggles we have had with our label and stuff. It’s all true – all reality. So we shot it, then we edited it and went back and forth with some changes, and now it’s with the president of Comedy Central who is the guy who decides whether or not to buy the show. We’ll probably find out by the time we start playing GVR if it’s going to become a reality and become a show starting in the fall. The cool thing about the commercial is that it puts us out there even more. People who are spending millions and millions of dollars on a TV show want to know that what they’re spending money on is going to be worth it for them. I think Steel Panther is something that everybody in America and worldwide is going to dig.

Steel Panther Returns to Green Valley Ranch

Steel Panther Returns to Green Valley Ranch on 6/19

SCB: You think everyone in America will dig Steel Panther? Why’s that?

MS: Hell yes! Because – who doesn’t like to get high, *&^@%$ chicks, and listen to metal? I mean, really? Even if you don’t like Heavy Metal, who doesn’t like to !#@$ chicks? Know what I mean? Unless you’re gay, and then who doesn’t like to listen to Heavy Metal, get *%#*& up and ^@%&* guys? Lesbians? Same thing.  It doesn’t matter what your sexual preference is! With Steel Panther, we’re all inclusive: It’s doesn’t matter if you’re black, white, asian, gay or straight or bi. You don’t even have to get high if you don’t want to!

You can even bring your grandmother to the show. Check this out: we’ve had a grandmother, a mother and a daughter back stage at the same time. I’m telling you right now: This grandmother hung out with Zeppelin, the mom with Poison, and now, you know, the new kid is learning about metal. Who better to teach her the lineage than Steel Panther?

SCB: All that animal print… How do Steel Panther and PETA get along?

MS: Well, we have not had ANY problems from Pamela Anderson! She still um, likes it… (censored), so that’s cool. Most people realize that all this animal print stuff that we wear is synthetic – it’s spandex! There’s no animal with spandex skin, you know? No one really freaks out anymore. I eat meat though – a lot of meat. I’m actually a vagitarian. Print that $#!&@!

Lexxi Foxxx of Steel Panther

SCB: Let’s play a game of “Who’s Gnarlier?”

Van Halen or Van Hagar? Van Halen!

Def Leppard or  Motley Crue? Whoa. That’s @#$% up!  Dude, that’s like saying P@#$% or B$%#’s?!  They’re both good for different times.

Eyeliner or Hairspray? Eyeliner.

Cheech or Chong? Cheech.

Fishnet or Spandex? Well, when you’re skinny – fishnet. If you have a beer belly goin’ on – spandex, so I’m going with spandex.

Ozzy or Lemmy? Ozzy! Just jammed with Ozzy. Played Iron Man at the Spike Men’s choice awards. House band for the whole show. It was sweet.

Jack Daniels or Jose Cuervo? Jack Daniel’s. Cheaper and easier to get.

Thanks, Michael. We’ll see you Saturday Nights inside Ovation at Green Valley Ranch.

About Steel Panther:

Steel Panther, formed in 1983, has gathered a large fan base on the west coast, jamming onstage with rock stars such as Sully Erna of Godsmack, Aaron Lewis of Staind and Justin Hawkins of The Darkness, among others. Steel Panther members Michael Starr, Satchel, Lexxi Foxxx and Stix Zadinia rock the stage with their big hair, tight pants and hilarious rock-star banter. Performing songs from their 2009 debut album Feel the Steel such as “Death to All But Metal,” “The Shocker,” “Eatin’ Ain’t Cheatin’” and many more, the rock stars hold nothing back for audiences. The band also recently filmed a pilot displaying their wild and crazy antics for a reality show with Comedy Central. With what is sure to be a raucous return, guests of Ovation can enjoy the loud and colorful stylings of Steel Panther every Saturday with doors at 11 p.m.

Ovation is a 500-seat venue offering booths for up to six people with a $200 minimum bar tab. The show is open to adults 21 years or older and there is no cost for admission.  Entry to the concerts will be first come, first served and based upon venue capacity. To reserve a booth, please call 702-617-7777.

AFTER TWO LONG months of good behavior, Steel Panther is welcomed back with open arms to Green Valley Ranch’s Ovation beginning Saturday, June 19. Michael Starr and Steel Panther

We caught up with lead singer, Michael Starr, to talk about what’s new with Steel Panther in this, the first of two interview blog entries.

SC Blog (SCB): You’re back at GVR after some “time away.” Can you talk about this restraining order situation? What happened?

Michael Starr (MS): Kind of a long story… after our shows, we like to do a little after party thing at the Drop Bar to hang out and drink with chicks. So last time we played GVR, we set up shop, got some girls, got some drugs, then we went up to our suite to party and after we were, you know… done, we were smoking in bed and sort of set a mattress on fire. Well, it wasn’t really on fire, just sort of smoldering.  Fire alarm went off. Everyone was really f’d up and we didn’t really know what was going on. Cops came. It was not cool.

You know, GVR loves us. They let us party and do whatever we want, pretty much… but when we start burning their $#%! down, they don’t dig that.

SCB: For those new to your show, what can they expect to get from a Steel Panther concert?

MS: Well, I can tell you what you won’t get: You won’t get a boring show. You won’t be bummed out, and you won’t want to go to bed right after the show. The first thing you’ll see is four dudes that look really cool, rockin’ in sync on stage, doing a bunch of huge kicks and jumps and it just looks bitchin’ – by the time you get past looking at us, and get into the music, you’re probably 4 or 5 songs into it. Then you realize- this is really fun! These guys look killer and the lead singer can lip-sync really well!

SCB: So when can we see you back at Green Valley Ranch?

MS: Saturday, June 19th – but this is important: we’re doing Saturdays now. We used to be there on Fridays for a long time, but now we’re doing Saturdays, and we’re excited about it. It should be easier for people who come from out of town to catch our shows.

Steel Panther Returns to Green Valley Ranch

Steel Panther Returns to Green Valley Ranch

SCB: Any special celebrity appearances planned?

MS: You might know that we started residency at the House of Blues on the strip a while back, and that’s moving to Fridays in July. We’ve had Carrot Top, Criss Angel and a bunch of famous actors and actresses and people who I’m not really into, but we actually get more famous people at Green Valley Ranch. Because it’s not right on the strip, they can go there and party – without the press – when they get out there having fun and are partying with chicks that they shouldn’t be, they don’t want that in the paper, ya know what I mean?

We don’t normally have celebrities lined up to play with us, but we have had Scott Ian from Anthrax, and the lead singers from lots of great bands like Great White, Warrant, Nickelback… you know, that was fun… But a couple weeks ago at the Key Club we had two chicks come on stage and make out. That’s cooler than Nickelback, right?

SCB: What’s your favorite part about Ovation?

MS: The backstage area is bitchin’. You can sneak chicks back there really easy and discreet. I have a monitor that I can just talk into and we have a roadie who takes coordinates, you know, latitude and longitude scenarios, and goes out and gets the girls who are there with their boyfriends and stuff. For every guitar solo, I’m in back with a girl. Oh, and the sound is pretty good, too.

SCB: So, after the show, we hear you like to hit the table games?

MS: Anyone who knows me, knows that after the show and after the party at Drop Bar, you can always find Michael Starr kicking ass at blackjack! They have masseuses giving massages and hot waitresses serving up cocktails, and we even have our own chip with our name on it! What else can you ask for?

In Part 2 of our interview, learn about Steel Panther’s upcoming television pilot for the Comedy Channel, the new beer commercial, and PETA. We also play a game of “Who’s Gnarlier?”

Rob Thomas, playing August 14 poolside at Red Rock Resort, is one a several big-name shows this summer at Station Casinos.

YOU WANT CHART toppers? Station Casinos has got ‘em.

In our first post about summer concerts at Station Casinos we touched on musical variety. Here we’re talking quality and let’s start with the KYCE Fan Jam inside Ovation at GVR on June 18 featuring live Country music from Chris Young and Eric Church, the current and last week’s No. 1 Billboard Country artists, respectively. Joe Nichols topped the charts three times and has 14 Top 40 singles. He performs live at Santa Fe Station June 26. Patty Loveless (10/9 at Santa Fe Station) was named Top Female Vocalist in 1996 and 1997 by the Academy of Country Music. Michael Bolton has eight Top 10 albums, and two No. 1 singles. He’s set to perform under the stars at Sunset Amphitheater on September 18.

Summertime Las Vegas Concerts at Station Casinos (Part 1)

SUMMERTIME IN LAS Vegas means hot days (a.k.a. pool season) and fun-filled crazy nights. We covered your afternoons and some great Las Vegas casino pool tips last week, and now we want to be sure you know where to enjoy your evenings with this impressive lineup of live music in Las Vegas. Currently, there are more than 40 concerts on tap for you this summer. This week, we hope you enjoy this three-part series written to showcase the variety, quality and value you can expect from Station Casinos concerts.

Part 1 of 3: Variety

Las Vegas is a city everyone can enjoy, so we make sure there’s music for everyone when you get here, or if you live here. Let’s call it an all-you-listen buffet of live Las Vegas music that you hope never ends (sort of like a guitar riff from Robert Cray). That’s why our Entertainment Department is the best in the business. If you like smooth jazz, country classics or if you just plain wanna rock, Station Casinos is your best bet.

Kicking off our summer concerts at Red Rock is The Robert Cray Band, this Saturday, May 22 inside the 450-seat Rocks Lounge. (Tip: Check into the 8-ticket VIP package for a great party!). Followed by The Memorial Weekend Concert Series: George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic on Friday, Loverboy on Saturday, and OK Go and The Cab on Sunday. (How are we doing so far on the variety?)

Jazz fans will love Guitars & Saxes featuring Gerald Albright, Jeff Golub, Kirk Whalum and Peter White at Boulder Station (5/28); R & R featuring Rick Braun & Richard Elliot at Aliante Station (6/18); and an evening under the stars at Sunset Amphitheater with Dave Koz, Jonathan Butler and special guest Sheila E (7/24).  There’s more: Michael Franks, Ottmar Leibert and Chris Botti are all on the schedule. Here’s a link for times and to buy concert tickets to our Las Vegas shows.

After Green Valley Ranch won an Academy of Country Music Award for 2010 Casino of the Year, you knew Station Casinos would continue to deliver great Country music. This summer, we have you Country fans covered. Check the top two spots of the current Billboard Country Chart and come back tomorrow to learn more about our Las Vegas Country concerts in tomorrow’s post – Part 2: Quality.

You already know Red Rock ROCKS (Loverboy, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Dave Mason, Patty Smyth And Scandal – plus much more in the Party On The Rocks Series), but this summer – there’s great rock concerts all around the Las Vegas Valley. Classic hard-rockers Great White take the stage July 30 at Sunset Station Amphitheater for a Listener Appreciation Party with KOMP 92.3, and Kenny Loggins is set to perform under the stars there the very next night. ASIA plays Green Valley Ranch on September 3, and look for even more summer concert announcements to come!

Hey, we told you there was variety!

(Continued in Part 2, showcasing the quality of entertainment you’ll see this summer!)
