Las Vegas Concerts: Ted Nugent & Smokey Robinson at GVR

What are the odds? Two music legends. Both from Detroit. Both playing at the same arena within a few of weeks of one another.

That’s the deal when Rock n’ Roll idol Ted Nugent takes the stage at Green Valley Ranch’s Grand Events Center on Saturday, Jan. 23. Then, on Saturday, Feb. 13, R&B icon Smokey Robinson plays at GVR . The SC Blog also thinks this is awesome: although neither blogs, both are into Social Media. Cool, right? Even cooler, Green Valley Ranch, one of the coolest  hotel casinos in Las Vegas, is offering individual Las Vegas hotel packages for both shows (see links below).

PBA Tournament of Champions at Red Rock Lanes

Red Rock Lanes will host 63 of the world's best bowlers Jan. 19-24 in the 45th PBA Tournament of Champions.

SEATTLE – When the Professional Bowlers Association Tournament of Champions was introduced in 1962 by PBA founder Eddie Elias and the organization’s tournament committee, it provided the PBA Tour with an elite platform to showcase an exclusive field of champions.

The 45th PBA Tournament of Champions, to be conducted Jan. 19-24 at Red Rock Lanes at the Red Rock Casino Resort & Spa in Las Vegas, will feature 63 players who have earned their right to compete in the second major of the 2009-10 Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour season by virtue of winning a PBA title. The finals will be televised live on ESPN on Jan. 24 at 1 p.m. Eastern (10 a.m. Pacific).

With an event that has a rich tradition and a stellar field of players there are many storylines. Here are a few especially noteworthy stories:

  • Kelly Kulick of Union, N.J., will once again make PBA Tour history by becoming the first woman to compete in a Tournament of Champions. She earned her berth by winning the first PBA Women’s World Championship. Kulick originally made history by becoming the first woman to qualify for the PBA’s Exempt Tour in 2006.
  • Tom Smallwood, of Saginaw, Mich., who earned a Tour exemption after being laid off from his job at General Motors last spring, will try to win his second major after winning the PBA World Championship in December in storybook fashion against reigning Player of the Year Wes Malott.
  • At age 50, Hall of Famer and all-time PBA Tour titles leader Walter Ray Williams Jr. of Ocala, Fla., is still trying for his first Tournament of Champions win. As one of the few things the 46-time titlist has yet to accomplish in his career, a Tournament of Champions win would enable him to complete the Triple Crown (PBA World Championship, U.S. Open and Tournament of Champions) Grand Slam (Triple Crown plus the USBC Masters) and Super Slam (Grand Slam plus the Touring Players Championship).
  • Australian two-handed specialist Jason Belmonte will compete in his first Tournament of Champions after winning his first Tour title in 2008-09.
  • Thirteen-time PBA Tour Champion Patrick Allen of Wesley Chapel, Fla., will be looking to defend his 2009 Tournament of Champions title.
  • Jason Couch of Clermont, Fla., is the only player to have won three consecutive Tournament of Champions titles and will be looking to become the first bowler to win it four times.

Check out Red Rock Resort’s “Tournament of Champions” Hotel Package special for the big tourney!

The Tournament of Champions is open exclusively to Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour exempt-player champions; the winners of the most recent PBA Regional Players Championship and Regional Players Invitational; the United States Bowling Congress Masters winner; the USBC Senior Masters, PBA Senior U.S. Open and PBA World Championship winners; all Tournament of Champions past winners, PBA Hall of Famers, and for the first time, the PBA Women’s World Championship titlist.

The first Tournament of Champions was conducted in 1962 in Indianapolis. The event was not conducted in 1963 and ’64 but moved to Akron, Ohio, in 1965 where it was conducted until 1994. Since then, it has been conducted in various locations.

Additional in-depth coverage of the PBA Tournament of Champions and all Tour events is available by subscribing to pba.com’s Xtra Frame video service. Subscription information is available by visiting pba.com/xtraframe.

RECIPE BOX: Picadillo Soup

Beef or turkey, spicy or not, Picadillo is fun to say and better to eat on a cold day.

It’s cold outside, so Chef Dirk warms things up this week with a recipe for spicy-as-you-want-it-to-be Picadillo Soup.

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ lb. cooked taco meat (make your favorite taco meat from )
  • ½ cup frozen peas
  • ½ cup frozen green beans (diced)
  • ½ cup diced celery
  • ½ cup diced carrots
  • ½ cup potatoes
  • ½ cup diced onions
  • ½ cup frozen corn
  • ½ cup diced green bell pepper
  • 2 TBL olive oil
  • 1 TBL minced garlic
  • 2 tsp ground cumin
  • 2 tsp kosher salt
  • 1 tsp freshly ground black pepper
  • 3 TBL chili powder
  • 2 15oz cans diced tomatoes
  • 3 qt chicken stock

Method

  • Cook taco meat as you would tacos.
  • In a large stock pot, sauté the carrots, celery and onions in the olive oil until the onions are translucent.
  • Add the garlic and cook for 3-4 minutes.
  • Add the chicken stock, tomatoes, cumin, chili powder, salt and pepper, bring to a simmer.
  • Add all the remaining ingredients and bring to a boil.
  • Lower the heat and simmer for 1 hour.

Adjust the seasonings by adding more salt and pepper or more chili powder for a spicy soup.

Makes 1 gallon.

Las Vegas Loose Video Poker at Palace Station

Across from the Palace Bingo Room, the Gambler's Den is a must for video poker players looking for an edge.

We’re letting loose.

There’s always a lot of loose talk in Las Vegas about loose slot and video poker machines. Right now, Palace Station is backing up that claim with a special designated area offering hundreds of games with 99% payback or better on optimal play.

  • We’re calling it “the way Vegas used to be.”
  • We’re calling it “no gimmicks…no games…just a good gamble.”
  • Officially, we’re calling it the Gambler’s Den.

“[99% payback] means that, over time, the machine will pay back over 99% of the money that is put through it,” said Daniel “Royal Flush” Freid, Slot Director at Palace Station. “Players won’t find a better deal for video poker on the majority of machines at any casino. Many places will advertise them and then make them hard to find or limit what denominations they can play. We’re putting it in plain sight and going to a higher denomination than many places.”

Located across from the Bingo Room at Palace, the Gamblers’ Den has more than 200 of players’ favorite games like Deuces Wild, Bonus Poker and Triple Double Bonus Poker including many progressives. All of the games are in multiple denoms up to $5.

If you’re a video poker player looking for an edge, stop in the Gambler’s Den and get loose with us!

Sunset offers more than 200 poker paytables certified to pay back over 100% based on max coins played at optimum strategy.

David “The House” Frankhouser, Corporate Director of Gaming Operations at Station Casinos, has agreed (we didn’t even have to ask him twice) to inform the SC Blog and our loyal readership (that’s you) about new happenings on the slot floor across Station Casinos properties.

Of course reading about slot machines isn’t as exciting as playing slot machines, but from now on when you want to get the latest on Las Vegas slot machines and game themes, new slot promotions across all our Las Vegas gaming locations, and everything else about video reels, video slots, video poker – the Station Casinos Blog is the spot.

Here’s the latest and greatest:

Santa Fe Station reported that:

  • Two brand-new progressive reel slots – Fireball and Jackpot 7s – are now located next to the Poker Room.
  • New Williams video slots with a Multi-Play feature are now available. Guests can play four games at one time with linked bonuses.

Sunset Station told us that it:

  • Just added the latest Konami penny video reel product, now located near the Bingo Room, offering four exciting new game themes: China Mystery, Lago Di Amore, Pineapple Coast, Mermaid Sunset.
  • Also added more favorite “Fish” titles in pennies including the newest releases of Catch The Big One, Gold Fish II Armada and Gold Fish II Mermaid’s Wonder. Look for these games near the Bingo Room and movie theater.
  • Sunset also told us that it offers the latest Video Reel craze, where you can play four games at the same time, on the following new and classic themes: Hawaiian Sunset, Golden Eagle, Wolf Run and Cleopatra. These games are offered across the casino floor.
  • Lastly, Sunset offers more than 200 poker paytables certified to pay back over 100% based on max coins played at optimum strategy in denominations from quarters up to dollars. These games are offered across our casino floor. Look for the “Optimum Play Poker” glass on the machines.
