…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Enough has been said about the unfortunate drama leading up to UFC 152. If you’re a serious fan of MMA, it’s all old news to you. If you’re a casual fan you don’t really need all the details. If you’re not a fan of MMA at all, then you’ve stop reading by this point. Suffice it to say, the interim between the last UFC card and this Saturday’s salvaged event in Toronto has had its ups and downs (mostly downs). By the UFC’s own admission, the less than perfect circumstances (meaning injuries, scrambled replacements, and questionable decisions by some top stars) has been the most difficult period in memory for Dana White and Zuffa since their purchase of MMA’s premier promotion over a decade ago.

Saturday’s UFC 152 will go a long way toward determining how well the UFC has come through the rough patch, and how well the loyal fan base has stayed in tact. With two title fights on one fight card, Toronto should go a long way to repairing any lingering bad taste from recent difficulties.

World Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones will fight veteran Vitor Belfort, after speculation involving at least four other possible opponents for Jones over the past several weeks. Despite the long odds for Belfort, the UFC has managed to provide an intriguing match up none-the-less. While the aging Belfort is a huge underdog, he also possesses a unique style, significant power, and hand speed which Jones has yet to see in the cage. Vitor Belfort is also a long standing fan favorite which should be starkly evident during introductions where the ever more villainous ‘Bones’ Jones is likely to hear the fruits of recent career choices raining down from the mostly blue collar crowd in Canada.

Scheduled for the ‘Co-Main Event’ is the first ever UFC Flyweight Title Fight. This exciting match up virtually guarantees fireworks, as both 125 lbs. contenders Joseph Benevidez and Demetrious Johnson have made highlight reel inclusion a career specialty. Also making a return to the Octagon are Michael Bisping and Brian Stann, in a match up that easily could have been a solid co-main event on its own.

Add to the aforementioned bouts the returns from exile of Matt Hamill and Vinny Magalhaes (self-imposed and performance based respectively), and also the appearances by fan favorites Cub Swanson and Evan Dunham, and you have an event in 152 that stacks up as one of the better cards of 2012. It should certainly go a long way towards getting the UFC back to business as usual: combat sport at its finest.

The UFC returns to Calgary this Saturday for UFC 149 Faber vs. Barao. This fight card has been plagued with injuries, with 9 of the originally planned fights having been affected by injury. In his own words, Dana White called this event with all it’s twists and turns “the craziest of all time. “Just a handful of the big names that will NOT  be fighting include Jose Aldo, Antonio Nogueira, Mauricio Rua, Michael Bisping, Thiago Alves, Thiago Silva….  getting the picture? The 20,000 seat Saddledome (home of the Calgary Flames) is likely to still be substantially full, however. You see, Canadians are not at all averse to a good brawl, on or off the ice.

The solution? Former featherweight title holder Urijah Faber will take a second shot at the bantamweight belt. This time it’s the interim strap and the opponent is Renan Barão, a streaking Brazilian with an astounding 28-1 record. Faber has long been a fan favorite for his relentless “take no prisoners” fighting style and numerous Fight Of The Night performances. He’s won a fair portion of his current following from incredibly gutsy outings…. going 4-1/2 rounds with a broken hand against Mike Brown at WEC 41 comes immediately to mind.

So an exciting main event is a virtual given at 149, but will it be enough to make this a memorable night of fights? MMA is first and foremost an unpredictable phenomenon, hence the addictive appeal which has helped fuel the UFC on it’s way to overtaking boxing, all other conventional combat sports, and several mainstream sports. It’s impossible to say whether or not 149 can come anywhere close to the epic intensity of it’s predecessor 148, but the 2012 version of the UFC is one with an incredibly deep pool of fighters. This allows the company to compensate when a plague of injuries erupts.

Dana White (with a fair amount of help from matchmaker Joe Silva) has become a master of filling the proverbial “holes in the dam,” and in the case of UFC 149 the mission appears to be accomplished by plugging in quite a few fighters known for their crowd pleasing “all or nothing” fight styles. The 31-2-1 Hector Lombard goes against the 15-4 “Barbarian” Tim Boetsch in a middleweight bout that can’t possibly disappoint , and the always willing “stand and trade” banger Cheick Kongo (who weighed in at a substantial 240 lbs.) takes on a truly massive heavyweight in Shawn Jordan. Jordan is 13-3 and weighed in at 260 lbs. That’s a big dude.

The balance of the card is filled with second tier names, but all the kind of fighters that we’ve been looking forward to seeing again. Court McGee takes on Nick Ring, Matt Riddle takes on Chris Clements at 170lbs., and the 50-14-1 veteran Brian Ebersole goes against the 8-2 James Head (also at welterweight).

Six bouts will be broadcast for free via Facebook and the FX Network, while the main card will be broadcast exclusively via Pay-Per-View. It should be another a great night of Professional MMA! Where will you be watching?

Biggest fight of the year? No doubt. Where will you be watching? If you’re lucky enough to get your hands on a ticket to the live event, we highly suggest not messing around and getting to the arena for this historic fight! The next best thing if you haven’t locked down your seat is one of Station Casinos 6 Fight Parties throughout the Las Vegas Valley! It all goes down on Saturday, as if this week didn’t have enough blockbusters in store with UFC International Fight Week in town and a little hush hush party we’re throwing for the nation’s birthday on the 4th of July! (Tweet #sclv4th!)  Oooh, this is gonna’ be good!

Dedicated fight fans won’t need any back story for this one, but this is a fight that even non-fight fans are going to tune into in record numbers. It’s likely that quite a few converts are going to be made this Saturday, as was the case after the now iconic Silva vs Sonnen I on August 7, 2010. For the uninitiated (and for fight freaks who just can’t get enough) here’s the nutshell version of this historic rivalry:

What do you get when you combine the universally accepted greatest MMA fighter of All-Time with an acid-tongued fight promoting savant who just happens to be the inarguable top contender for the Middleweight strap? Staying on theme, you get fireworks the likes of which Francis Scott Key could only dream about! The world witnessed something truly stunning in Silva vs Sonnen I. The world’s best fighter was thrown around like a proverbial ragdoll for 23 minutes before pulling off the most unlikely of come from behind submission victories in the history of the sport.

It was in fact the latest submission victory in a 5-Rounder (and therefore in any UFC fight since the modern definition of ‘Rounds’), and it cemented Anderson Silva as truly one of the greatest combat fighters in history. Silva’s skills were never in question. That his heart could match the level of his remarkable talent was the revelation. It was disappointing news to Chael Sonnen too, who despite his campaign as the ‘People’s Champ’ virtually since the day after their first meeting, was clearly thoroughly dumbfounded and crushed by the late reversal of fortune.

What makes this fight so highly anticipated? Given that the Champion Silva not only defended successfully against Sonnen once already, and reportedly did so while battling a severe rib injury, is it odd that this clash is viewed by many to be a uniquely interesting match-up? One need look no further than Hall of Famer Randy Couture’s recent analysis, in which he identified an unusual role reversal for a championship bout. Given the manner in which Sonnen completely dominated the first fight for better than four rounds (despite losing), it is Silva that has more adjustments to make going into Saturday’s rematch.

That’s an interesting take, and Couture knows a thing or two about rematches and championships! Couture’s analysis may prove spot on, but one thing is for certain: if Chael Sonnen is not Anderson Silva’s Kryptonite, he’s real darn close. Styles make fights as they say, and unfortunately for Silva (fortunately for us), he is forced to prove himself one more time against the man that landed more strikes on him in 23 minutes than all of his 15 previous opponents combined. Is Chael Sonnen that strong of a contender, or does he simply provide the worst possible stylistic match-up for the future Hall-of-Fame bound Silva, the longest reigning champion in the history of the sport?

All these questions and more will be answered this Saturday night at UFC 148! If the Middleweight Title fight wasn’t enough excitement for one event, Forrest Griffin is throwing a retirement party for Tito Ortiz the same night, and Patrick Cote will go against Cung Le. This will be Le’s first bout since being KO’d by fan favorite Wanderlei Silva in a memorable fight. We hope you take us up on our invitation and join us at one of our Station Casinos Fight Parties! Where will you be watching?

It’s a big weekend for the UFC, with back to back cards this Friday and Saturday. It gets going with UFC on FX: Maynard vs. Guida, a free fight card that is packed with all but certain fireworks in the Main Event and throughout. The final match of the Sam Stout vs. Spencer Fisher trilogy is a guaranteed barnburner too. Fan favorites Ross Pearson, Cub Swanson, Matt Brown, Dan Miller and Rick Story are all scheduled to fight.  This free UFC on FX fight card can be viewed at any Station Casinos Sports book. Don’t miss it!

On Saturday night, an epic rematch is set for a live from Brazil Pay-Per-View, UFC 147: Silva vs. Franklin II. Despite suffering the disappointment of yet another high profile fight being disrupted due to injury (Silva’s initial opponent Vitor Belfort withdrew), the UFC has yet again turned lemons into ‘Mike’s Hard Lemonade’ by replacing Belfort with an equally big name and equally dangerous veteran in Franklin.

The change of plans has also resulted in an unusual catch-weight scenario (a rare 190 lbs limit), one that fits Franklin’s ‘modus operandi’ to a tee, yet should be no hindrance whatever to Wanderlei who fought well for many years above his more natural 185 division. Franklin is seen as the ideal 190-195 pounder, and a likely champion of that hypothetical division were it to exist.

Watch the full UFC on FX: Maynard vs. Guida Preview

This 5 rounder is unlikely to go that long, so be careful about your bathroom breaks. Each fighter has KO power and the tenacity to stand and trade at the highest level, so a decision is unlikely. There’s a lot at stake for each, with many armchair warriors having called for ‘Wand’ to call it a day for several years now (out of admiration, not disrespect in most cases).

Franklin is not exactly in that territory yet with several extremely impressive performances in the last 3 years, but Franklin still is edging toward his curtain call with the unlikelihood of his returning to 185 lbs and very little chance of winning a title at 205 lbs (where champions nowadays tend to ‘walk around’ at 230 lbs).

Despite the obstacles, with a decisive win either man can become an extremely hot commodity at either 185 or 205lbs, just ask Dan Henderson who performed exactly that ‘back from the dead’ trick with just 2 impressive wins over top names.

As expected, the balance of the card is dominated by Brazilian fighters. It is after all broadcasting from Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Fight fans will recognize ‘Top 10’ Heavyweight Fabricio Werdum in the co-main event as he undertakes a serious test against Mike Russow.  A ton of up and coming Brazilian killers fill out the card. The casual fan will not recognize the names of many of these South American maulers, but the skill level of all is ‘par-excellence’.

UFC 147: Silva vs. Franklin II Live on PPV from Brazil will be shown at 5 separate Fight Parties throughout the Las Vegas Valley. See the Station Casinos Fight Party list below and choose your favorite spot to watch all the live action go down on Saturday night!

UFC 146 Viewing Parties in Las Vegas

UFC 146 Dos Santos  vs. Mir is the second card of a string of 4 of the biggest MMA fight cards the UFC has ever presented back to back (to back to back) on pay-per-view. UFC 145 saw an epic grudge match come to a head with former best friends Jon Jones and Rashad Evans going the 5 round distance. The Champion Jones kept his title. Coming in June at UFC 147, 2 legends of the sport face off in Brazil. Vitor Belfort and Wanderlei Silva are arguably 2 of the top 10 fighters of all-time. They are unquestionably 2 of the all-time fan favorites.

On July 7th we are likely to get what is to be the most talked about card of 2012, as the rematch between Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva and #1 contender Chael Sonnen has been in the works since the very moment of the dramatic conclusion to their first 5 round war. After losing badly for 4 rounds, the champ Silva dug deep (as champions do) to pull out a miraculous win with a late 5th round triangle choke. To call it memorable would be an understatement. Silva vs. Sonnen II  UFC 148 should fittingly have a ton of fireworks.

Sandwiched in the middle of this spring-summer UFC blitz is the only MMA Heavyweight Championship match that really matters, that between current champ Junior Dos Santos and 2 time former champion Frank Mir (sorry Strikeforce). This match is not short on drama itself, as multiple injuries and run-ins with the testosterone police have resulted in a much different looking fight card then what was initially proposed for UFC 146. Regardless of all that, Dos Santos is the undisputed #1, and Mir is a legitimate threat to steal his title. Adding to the storyline is the fact that Mir’s recent surge was topped with a devastating (and injurious) win over Dos Santos hero and mentor, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.

Who will you be rooting for: the Las Vegas local Frank Mir or the Brazilian Junior Dos Santos? Where will you be watching? There is nothing like a Heavyweight title match in the UFC!

The exciting lineup of fights this Saturday also includes several more big name heavyweights including top contenders Cain Velasquez and Antonio Silva. Fan favorite Roy Nelson takes on Dave Herman, and Stefan Struve goes against rising star Lavar Johnson. For the full fight card click the banner at the very bottom.

Seven UFC 144 Viewing Parties In Las Vegas

THE MAIN EVENTS for UFC 144 will get their share of the headlines, including a highly anticipated lightweight title fight and the return of the all-time Japanese crowd pleaser Quinton Rampage Jackson. You’re in for a great fight card top to bottom this weekend at our UFC 144 Viewing Parties in Las Vegas. The UFC has pulled out all the stops for this highly significant return to martial arts sacred ground. Several of Japan’s best fighters are showcased on this card, plus two fighters will return from the losing end of recent title fights. Jake Sheilds and Yushin Okami both have their backs to the wall and need impressive performances.

The main event between reigning lightweight champ Frankie Edgar and #1 contender Benson Henderson could turn into a marathon. Each fighter possess a huge gas tank and a solid chin. The co-main event could be the mirror image, however. With light heavyweights Rampage Jackson and Ryan Bader clashing, this fight is likely to be significantly shorter in duration. Have your beers in hand for this one before round one is officially “dinged”.

Edgar and Henderson are both extremely fast and tough cardio warriors who like to take their opponent’s game apart methodically while keeping them guessing over the course of many action packed rounds.  Rampage and Bader likely just want to bang it out. Rampage is royalty in Japan, a major star who wants an exciting fight even more than he wants the win. Stemming back from his prime in the formerly prominent PRIDE organization, there is an entire nation of MMA fans waiting to welcome him “home”.  Both Jackson and Bader bring a monster right hand shot, and with that a potential one punch finish to their rival’s evening.

My pick for the DON’T BLINK fight of the night is Anthony Pettis vs. Joe Lauzon. Pettis is famous for flying off the cage and landing a head kick to main event participant Benson Henderson in their earlier bout for the WEC title (see it at the end of this post). Meanwhile, his opponent Joe Lauzon just collects “fight of the night” bonuses for a living. Seriously, blink and you might miss this one!

Locations of UFC 124 Viewing Parties in Las Vegas

Oops! You found an older post.
Go here for information about our UFC Viewing Parties for this weekend!

FINALLY, EH? GEORGES St. Pierre and Josh Koscheck will rematch this Saturday night, December 11 in Montreal. The coaches from this season’s The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) show on Spike TV aren’t friends. Not even close. If you watch the show, you know that these fighters couldn’t be more opposite from one another. GSP is quiet and confident. Koscheck’s trash talk has been “writing checks” all season long, and we are all waiting to see if GSP is ready to cash those “checks” in. The boos will be deafening in St. Pierre’s turf when Kos is announced, but that’s pretty much the only sure thing at UFC 124.

Other matchups we’re excited for on Saturday night: Two towering giants collide! 6’11 Stefan Struve vs. 6’7 Sean McCorkle should be exciting. We’ll see if McCorkle’s 33lbs is an advantage or not. UFC Veterans, Joe “Daddy” Stevenson vs. Mac Danzig could go 100 mph in any direction, to the mat or end by strikes. Jim Miller vs. Charles Oliveira have the MMA blogs buzzing. Many think this will be fight of the night. Also, do. Not. Miss. The Muay Thai battle between Thiago Alves (beat Koscheck awhile back) vs. John Howard (wild, crazy exciting fights). (Author’s Pick for Fight Of the Night – see 5:55 in the video below).*

MMA FANS KNOW that UFC 119 is a fight card that might be overlooked by some fans – but don’t make that mistake – there’s some great match-ups here. This is an event that has kept the MMA rumor sites guessing throughout the summer. For those of you who don’t follow, we’ll try to sum it up for you as quickly as possible:

There’s these two big scary Brazilian brothers, both named Antonio Nogiera (I know, it’s weird) so they go by “Big Nog” (Heavyweight) and “Little Nog” (Light Heavyweight) to make it easier on us Americans. Big Nog was to fight Frank Mir in the main event. Little Nog was the co-main event vs. Ryan Bader. Little Nog’s won 7 straight fights. Bader’s 12-0 and the winner of the Ultimate Fighter show a couple seasons ago. Both are gnarly fighters on a roll, in other words.

Then Big Nog gets hurt in practice, so Croatian kickboxer and Pride Fighting legend, Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovich agreed to step in and give it a go. He’s got tree trunks for legs, and used to be a Croatian Special Forces Law Enforcement Officer. Cro Cop vs. Mir might be the one of the most quotable fights ever. Cro Cop is known for an all-time great pre-fight threat: “Right leg hospital. Left leg cemetery.” Frank Mir went on the record recently saying that Cro Cop can “kick your head into the bleachers.” Two other Ultimate Fighter show alumni, CB Dollaway and Matt Mitrione, will try to climb the ranks in their fights on Saturday night. The rest of the fight card showcases what’s awesome about the middle weight classes of the UFC – anything can happen.  Sean Sherk, Melvin Guillard, Matt Serra and Chris Lytle can either knock their opponents out, or tie them in knots. Anybody’s guess which strategy they pick this Saturday night in Indy.

You can watch UFC 119 in Las Vegas at five Station Casinos locations at Viewing Parties on Saturday, September 25th, live on Pay-Per-View from the Conseco Field House in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Will it be "Lights Out" for Toney in his UFC debut?

UFC 118′S GOT the lightweight title rematch with Frankie Edgar and BJ Penn, a tough call after their last title fight that Edgar won by decision.

MMA vs. Boxing: How long will James Toney, a very accomplished boxer with legendary hand speed, last in his UFC debut? That seems to be the question surrounding “Lights Out” in his throw-down against accomplished MMA legend, Randy Couture.

As if those two Main Events weren’t enough, Saturday’s under-card is overflowing with some of the most exciting 155 and 170 lb. talent in the UFC: Kenny Florian, Gray Maynard, Nate Diaz , Demian Maia and Marcus Davis all have been known for thrilling finishes.

Watch as five of our Las Vegas Hotel Casinos host Viewing Parties on Saturday, August 28 for UFC 118, live on Pay-Per-View from the TD Garden in Boston.

A few notes to accompany the info below: pre-sale admission to the Viewing Party at Sunset Station’s Club Madrid starts at 5pm, and you can call ahead for table reservations at GVR event. Enjoy!
